Keep Calm and Carry On (remaining in Europe)

Our fourth march in London in support of a People’s Vote on Brexit. Well, three marches and one protest at the Proroguing of Parliament. Friends often ask me if marching and protesting makes any difference. Well, the third People’s Vote march coincided with Parliament meeting for the first time in thirty eight years. The following day Caroline Lucas sent out an email saying ‘We heard you in the Chamber’.

Our day began at 5 with some rather depressing overnight tweets saying the voting intention looked as if they would vote the deal through. Then a tweet arrived from Cornwall4EU saying they were on the road. Even the Berry’s Coach clock seemed supportive:

Arrived at Hyde Park at midday. Crowd huge, but more subdued than previous marches. Everyone aware this really was crunch time and the crucial vote may have happened before we reached Parliament Square. Great atmosphere as before with some very British placards.

Numbers on the march vary but the consensus was around 1 million people on the day.

And yes, three marches later we are still cross!

So often it was the personal stories that made the most powerful banners.

We ground to a halt just past Downing Street. Thankfully large video screens had been set up so we were able to watch the speeches and the vote in the Commons

The effort some people made to join the march was humbling.
